Orphan Shabbat, an initiative of HaTikva Families in partnership with Orphan Sunday and Christian Alliance for Orphans (CAFO), is a global awareness day for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Each November, thousands of events are sponsored by individuals, communities, organizations, and businesses across America and around the world to bring awareness to the plight of OVC in our communities, countries, and the world with a unified goal that God’s great love for the fatherless will resonate in their lives and in our hearts.
For Orphan Shabbat 2018, HaTikva Families organized over 25 volunteers from all over Israel to renovate, repair, clean, and paint one of Orr Shalom’s group foster homes in the Jerusalem area. This home, a haven for 13-18-year-old girls from complex backgrounds, needed a serious facelift and some tender loving care. HaTikva Family volunteers tackled each need with gusto and a heart to show the love of the Father to these precious girls.
Tamar Katz, of Orr Shalom’s External Relations Department, was amazed how a simple coat of fresh, white paint looked and felt like fresh hope for these girls who are working so hard to find a silver lining. It was a privilege and an honor to stand with Orr Shalom and OVC in Israel and shower them with the love of our Messiah on Orphan Shabbat 2018.
